Simchah means rejoice, and we know you’ll rejoice with the residents of the Jewish Home when they once again take the stage for the Home’s annual Chanukah show. This year’s concert-style production sees our “students” (residents and staff) making it to their senior year – and what an achievement that is!
While we’ll celebrate this auspicious occasion with all the pomp and circumstance it deserves, we haven’t forgotten that school’s meant to be fun, too. So here’s a sampling of the entertainment component:
Riding on the success of last year’s Simchah performance, we go on another Glee-style musical journey. From a parody of Red Red Wine (raise high those glasses of Manischewitz), to What a Wonderful World This Would Be (how much do we know about history, geography, trigonometry?) and a rendition of Thank You For Being a Friend by the entire chorus, this year’s show is sure to get on the honor roll and our students passing with flying colors (or pom-poms).
Chanukah show performance for the community:
Sunday, December 11, 2:00 p.m.
Lynne & Roy Frank Family Lounge
Jewish Home, 302 Silver Avenue, San Francisco
Because the Frank Family Lounge has limited seating, two additional performances of Simchah, the senior year, are specifically for Jewish Home residents. Please feel most welcome to join your loved one at these performances, as the Sunday, December 11 performance is for community guests only.
Chanukah show performances for residents of the Jewish Home:
Monday, December 12, 2:00 p.m.
Tuesday, December 13, 2:00 p.m.
Lynne & Roy Frank Family Lounge
Jewish Home, 302 Silver Avenue, San Francisco

More Than You Know, a great bluesy number, was delivered with feeling by resident “torch singer” Francine Hament.
Edie Shaffer performed a solo turn. In keeping with the show’s theme, it was aptly titled Glee.
Jack Orovitz made the stars twinkle and the sun shine with his rendition of Night and Day.
An experienced storyteller, Bernice Hunold took us into the allegorical world of Olde Sis’ Goose – with a moral to rival one of Aesop’s fables, and with a Southern accent, yet!
Claire Shor sang Put Your Arms Around Me, Honey, which she dedicated to her honey, her beloved late husband Max.
Mark Steiner impressed with his Flow art. It glowed, and so did he.
Moscow Lights glee club transported us to the shores of the Volga with their soulful singing.
Talented staff translated into talented artistes. Chief nursing officer Edwin Cabigao, pictured with unit coordinator Eunice Ragudo, serenaded the audience and danced, too.
Sandra Simon traded her usual chief administrative officer garb for a Jewish Home embossed purple tracksuit to take on the role of a cheerleader. She followed this by banging the bongo drums.
The cast of Simchah, the show that made us laugh, wipe a tear or two from our eyes, wave our pep rally flags, and applaud wildly. Rejoice, we surely did!
Staff performers were in both style and fine voice, as Lisa Dale O’Donnell (left) and Catherine Reid demonstrated.
D’Funk had da rhythm, da music, da young men and women. Who could ask for anything more?
“I’m full of love and I’m full of hope” was a line from cast-as-a-footballer Frank Greenberg’s original poem, which summed up the impact of the show. It was full of heart, soul, and love. We hope to see you at our 2011 production.
Children from the audience were invited to take part in the lighting of the candles on the menorah, which proved to be a moving moment for all present.
Performing community service and having a great time, too, at the Chanukah show’s community performance are these pom-pom bearing students from the Jewish Community High School of the Bay.
JCHS students Rachel Shatz and Libby Parker make sure that resident Bernice Hunold’s make-up is perfect for her storytelling turn in the Chanukah show.
